Hair Transplantation (Scalp, Eyebrow, Beard, Mustache & Scar)

A hair transplant is a procedure in which a dermatologist or plastic surgeon moves hair from one part of the body to a bald area of the head, eyebrow, eyelash, beard, mustache or scar. The surgeon usually moves hair from the back or side of the head to the front or top of the head. The area where the hair is removed called the 'donor site', to a bald or balding part of the body known as the 'recipient site.

What are the types of hair transplant?

There are two types of hair transplant methods: FUT or recently called FUSS (Follicular Unit Strip Surgery) and FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) recently called Follicular Unit Excision. The best option for you will depend on your individual needs and the recommendations of your physician.

Is FUE harvesting a scarless surgery?

No. FUE will result in scarring and is not a minimally invasive surgery. It is important for you to understand that FUE harvesting is often misrepresented by doctors who promote FUE as a “scarless” surgery, but if you cut or shave your hair short, FUE harvesting of grafts can give you a “moth-eaten” appearance because the hairs that were harvested from your donor area do not grow back. This is a result of overly aggressive surgeons who push the number of grafts harvested. With a rise in mega session FUEs offered by some clinics, there is a new concern for donor area depletion, infection, and worse scarring than a traditional strip surgery.

Does hair transplant look natural?

Hair transplants can look completely natural if the procedure is done properly and as long as you go to the right surgeon. Hair transplant candidates may be concerned about the conspicuousness of their results, but with a talented and qualified surgeon, "Your scalp will not look like a doll’s head or with a fake hairline".

Is hair transplant permanent?

Hair transplant is a permanent solution to hair loss in the sense that the hair bulbs transferred to areas of loss are genetically programmed to continue growing for life. However, over their lifetime some patients may require more than one procedure to maintain their desired overall look or to achieve the fuller and denser hair.

How many hair transplants can a person get?

Most of the people have the results they're looking for in just one or two hair transplant sessions, when thousands of hairs are transplanted in follicular units of one to four hairs each. However, the number of sessions is individual and different from one person to another.

Is hair transplant safe?

Hair transplant surgery is probably one of the safest surgical procedures once performed by a qualified, fully experienced board- certified hair transplant surgeon and a skillful team. Like any other procedure, individual’s reactions to the procedure and healing abilities varies.

What is the downtime for hair transplant?

Most people are able to return to work 2 to 5 days after the operation and that’s mostly because of the swelling on the face or perhaps around the eyes.

How long does it take to see the final result?

Within 2 to 4 weeks after procedure, the transplanted hair will fall out, but you should start to notice new growth within a few months. Most people will see 60% of new hair growth after 6 to 9 months but In 12-18 Months you will see the final result of your hair transplant operation. You will get the look of more intensive, longer and thick hair. The final result will appear 12 to 15 month after the operation on the front area and 18 to 20 months on the crown area.

How much does the hair transplant cost?

The cost of hair transplants is dependent on many different factors including your location where you’d like to do the procedure, type of surgery, experience and qualification of the surgeon you choose and how many real grafts you will get. However the price range is highly variable and includes all out of pocket.

Do you want your perfect eyebrow shape and fullness?

Lack of eyebrows can be genetic. As you age, your eyebrows may thin, especially the outer third portion. You may have over-plucked your eyebrows and they no longer grow. You may have had a bad experience with eyebrow microblading and it looks like a green tattoo. You may just want a full eyebrow because filling in your eyebrows can become a burdensome morning routine. Eyebrow transplant surgery can address these issues.

How does beard transplant work?

Facial hair transplant surgery, which includes implanting hairs to the sideburns, mustache, or cheeks, works by harvesting the donor hair from the back of your scalp. In some cases, you can harvest the donor hairs from under your chin.

The premise of a hair transplant or facial hair transplant surgery is relocating hairs from an abundant area, which is usually the back of your head, to the area where you want more hair. The donor hairs that are removed do not grow back in that same spot. Instead, they grow in the newly transplanted location (such as the cheeks, goatee, sideburns, mustache, etc).

Is a beard transplant worth it?

If you always wanted to have a beard or a 5 o’clock shadow, beard hair transplant surgery is a great option. Just like your hairstyle, having facial hair or a full beard can completely change your look. Some men want to have patches of their beard filled in. Some want a neatly trimmed goatee or stylish sideburns. As insignificant as it may seem to others, an artistic beard transplant is worth it to many men.

Scalp Micro-Pigmentation (SMP)

What is SMP?

Some people who are not good candidates for hair transplant surgery often choose SMP to create the illusion of a full head of hair. SMP can also be used to conceal the linear scar after a Follicular Unit Transplantation procedure.

How does SMP work?

SMP is like a tattoo in that the pigment is deposited under your skin surface in the dermal layer of skin. The dermal layer of skin is the permanent layer. However, unlike a traditional tattoo, SMP is deposited in the upper dermal layer (just deep enough to make it permanent). A traditional tattoo is deposited deep into the dermal layer. The shallow application is what makes the SMP appear more like a hair follicle (5 o’clock shadow) and not a blob of tattoo ink. Unfortunately, the shallow depth can also push the SMP pigment up to the skin surface and can result in fading over time. Some patients may want a touch up after a few years.

How real does SMP look?

SMP is obviously not real hair, but it can closely mimic the 5 o’clock shadow of a shaved scalp. If you keep your scalp shaved, SMP can look undetectable even up close. Of course, the quality of work depends on the skills of the physician and their surgical staff as well as the pigment. It is an art form as much as it is a technical specialty.

What is the difference between SMP and a regular tattoo?

SMP is like a tattoo in that the pigment is deposited under your skin surface in the dermal layer of skin. The dermal layer of skin is the permanent layer. However, unlike a traditional tattoo, SMP is deposited in the upper dermal layer, so it is deep enough in the skin to make it permanent. The shallow application is what makes the SMP appear more like a hair follicle (or 5 o’clock shadow) and not a blob of tattoo ink. A traditional tattoo, on the other hand, is deposited deep into the dermal layer.

How long is each SMP session?

Each session can last between 4 and 8 hours. You can resume normal daily activities after your SMP session. However, if you choose to have the optional light sedation during your SMP, you may feel tired or sleepy for the remainder of the day.

What is the average time between SMP sessions?

It is recommended that patients wait a minimum of 2 weeks between sessions. This allows enough time for the skin to exfoliate. The interval between each session will be custom tailored to your scheduling needs. There is no issue with waiting longer than two weeks in between sessions.

Is Scalp MicroPigmentation permanent?

Scalp MicroPigmentation is like a tattoo, and it should be lifelong. But just as a tattoo fades over time, so may SMP. Each patient will experience some degree of fading. After a 5-year follow-up, 4 out of 5 patients are satisfied with their results and do not need or want a touch-up. However, there are discerning patients who request a touch up after 1-2 years.

Does Scalp MicroPigmentation look real?

SMP blends in with the thinning or balding areas on the scalp. With the right technique of a skilled surgeon or technician, you cannot tell that someone has had SMP, even up close.

How much does it cost?

The price depending on the  extent and the location of treatment. You can get all your information including the cost in a free consultation at Dr. Yavari’s office.
